Can cybernetic machines psychoanalyse?

Based on a Master’s dissertation in psychoanalysis (Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier III, 2024–2025) exploring the encounter between Freudian–Lacanian theory and cybernetics.

This site develops the theoretical foundations of CyberPsychoanalysis. It asks a precise question: under which conditions, and within what limits, could cybernetic machines participate in a psychoanalytic process?

The work proceeds in three movements, following the structure of the original dissertation: first, by highlighting convergences between cybernetics and psychoanalysis; second, by confronting the limits of any attempt to reduce the subject to a program; and finally, by sketching the outlines of a cyberpsychoanalytic clinic where machines are neither the future analysts nor simple tools, but elements of a larger system of regulation and perturbation.

Part I

Potential of cybernetic machines to psychoanalyse

The first movement of the dissertation explores how far we can go in thinking psychoanalysis and cybernetics together. It does not claim that a computer already is an analyst, but it reconstructs the shared ontological background that makes this question meaningful: apparatuses, circuits, feedback loops, regulation, entropy and information.

Shared ontological grounds: apparatus, system, circuit

On one side, Freud describes the psychic apparatus as an organization of systems (perception, unconscious, preconscious…) traversed by energy, governed by the pleasure–reality principle and structured by paths of discharge and regulation. On the other side, Norbert Wiener and cybernetics propose an ontology of machines, signals and feedback in which any system is defined by its capacity to regulate itself through information.

This first part of the work argues that these two languages are not identical, but homologous. The psychic apparatus can be read as a system of feedback loops; cybernetic machines can be read as devices that implement certain functions classically attributed to the psyche: perception, memory, anticipation, error-correction.

Circuits and psychic functions

The dissertation then explores analogies between psychic functions and cybernetic circuits. Primary and secondary processes can be compared to short and long routes in signal processing; repetition compulsion resonates with closed loops that keep returning to the same state; the pleasure–reality couple can be read as a tension between immediate discharge and stable regulation of the system.

Thinking in terms of circuits does not mean erasing the subject. It means that many clinical phenomena—symptoms, inhibitions, transfers—can be described as improvised architectures that the subject has constructed in order to survive a certain level of excitation, trauma or conflict.

Simulation, subjectivity and the “as-if” machine

Finally, the first part discusses the power of simulation. Advanced machines can emulate behaviours associated with listening, empathy or interpretation. They can model transferential scenarios and generate virtual doubles of the subject. Psychoanalysis, however, insists that the subject is not reducible to behaviour, but emerges from a division, a lack, a gap between what is said and what is meant.

The hypothesis is that cybernetic machines can become powerful “as-if” psychoanalysts: they can assist, simulate, amplify certain dimensions of the analytic situation, but they cannot embody the divided position of the subject of the unconscious.

Limits of cybernetic machines in psychoanalysis

The second movement examines where the analogy breaks down. It argues that the complexity of the subject and the logic of the unconscious exceed any deterministic architecture. Reductionist uses of cybernetics risk flattening division, desire and transfer into mere information-processing.

Irreducible complexity and division of the subject

Psychoanalysis insists that the subject is not a stable entity, but a division: between conscious and unconscious, between different identifications, between demand and desire. This division is not an error to be corrected by the system, but the very site from which speech, symptoms and creativity emerge.

Any attempt to capture the subject in a complete model—no matter how sophisticated—runs into this structural impossibility. There is always a remainder, something that escapes the code. In Lacanian terms, there is no metalanguage that can fully totalise the subject.

Reductionism and the risk of flattening the unconscious

Cybernetic metaphors are powerful, but they can become reductionist when taken too literally. The dissertation criticises certain readings of the brain as a pure information processor, the unconscious as a database, or drive conflicts as optimisation problems.

Such metaphors are useful when they remain oriented by analytic practice. They become dangerous when they claim to replace concepts like drive, fantasy, transfer or repetition with purely computational language.

Cybernetics can help us draw new schemata of the analytic situation, but it cannot abolish the opacity, the opaqueness, the non-knowledge that makes psychoanalysis possible.

Transfer, body and the non-virtual real

A crucial limit point is transference. Analytic work does not only involve information exchange; it involves the subtleties of presence, absence, waiting, frustration, the analyst’s body and voice, as well as the patient’s bodily inscriptions of trauma and jouissance.

Machines can simulate voices, faces, stabilised personas. They can reproduce elements of presence. But they do not carry a body that is itself implicated, transformed and affected by the treatment. The dissertation argues that this bodily dimension is not an accessory but central to psychoanalytic ethics.

Towards a cyberpsychoanalytic practice

The third movement is not a technological proposal but a clinical orientation. It sketches what it would mean to practice psychoanalysis in a world where cybernetic devices, AI systems and digital platforms shape the subject’s environment, fantasies and symptoms.

3.1

Machines as analytic partners, not analysts

The proposal of CyberPsychoanalysis is not to replace analysts with machines, but to consider machines as analytic partners. They can assist in tracking repetitions, visualising loops, storing and transforming material, or simulating certain configurations in a controlled way.

In this perspective, the machine is part of the setting: it is one of the elements with which the subject identifies, fights, negotiates. Its presence, limitations and failures all become material that can be worked through, rather than purely technical issues.

3.2

The analyst as deliberate noise and regulator

Drawing on cybernetic notions of noise, error and regulation, the dissertation rethinks the analyst’s function. The analyst introduces perturbations into the subject’s usual loops: interpretations, silences, changes in rhythm, and the very structure of the sessions function as carefully dosed “noise” that allows new configurations to emerge.

The analyst is thus both a regulator (holding the frame, supporting certain thresholds) and a source of disturbance. Cybernetic tools can make some of these dynamics visible, but they do not decide them. Their use is subordinated to an ethics of listening to the unconscious.

3.3

Clinical and ethical horizons

Finally, the work opens a series of ethical questions: what kind of data should be collected or avoided? How to prevent the analytic setting from becoming a space of surveillance and optimisation? What regulations are needed to protect the subject’s secrecy and the analyst’s responsibility?

Rather than offering a closed model, CyberPsychoanalysis is proposed as a framework for ongoing reflection. It is a way to think psychoanalysis with cybernetics—using its concepts and tools—while preserving what makes analysis unique: speech, transfer, and the respectful attention to what resists capture.
